Collage Return Imminent

Let it be known: DIYmedia’s collage galleries return on February 20. In the mix are 140 Truthful Translations of Political Speech (with 100 of those focused on our fearless leader), new Celebrity Speech collages featuring Rush Limbaugh and Dan Rather, among others…and possibly some entirely new galleries, if I can get my sh*t together. You can literally listen for half a day and not hear the same one twice. Perhaps a streaming component is in order…

Media Collage Offline; Major Site Updates Suspended for December

Woe is us – the popularity of the collage galleries did them in.
Worry not, though: we are currently scouting a server move and, if all goes well, DIYmedia will make the transition to its very own server with a nice fat pipe before the end of the year. There’s a huge backlog of collage to be added to the galleries (more than 30 new files for the Truthful Translations section alone!), so the re-debut will actually be an expansion.
All other audio/video content remains online, unaffected.
As a part of this process, other regular site updates will be suspended for the month (like the Schnazz, updates to the Enforcement Action Database, etc.). The news, however, will continue to flow in this space as usual.
My apologies for this inconvenience…

Partial Hiatus Ahoy & Miscellaneous Notes

Look for more sporadic news updates this month as I hunker down and pound out major portions of my master’s thesis. Regular refreshes (like the Schnazz) will continue, and news updates will occur if the story’s is big or unique, both of which could happen considering the FCC’s official implementation of its media ownership rule revisions takes place on September 4.
All of the coordinated grassroots media reform e-mail and call-in campaigns have worked so well to date that a big petition push is now on, and a national conference on media reform is slated for November 7-9 here in Madison. Collage Files Restored, Expanded

The temporary hiatus of the media collage and Mbanna Kantako file archives turned into an unexpected server demise, but all affected files have now been restored. I took the opportunity to catch up on new additions to the Truthful Translations of Political Speech collage galleries: there are several new collages sprinkled throughout, both audio and video.
Not surprisingly, the majority of them have something to do with George W. Bush, who is now the subject of 30 translations. Please Pardon the Hiatus

Completely unexpected life trauma has resulted in my emergency relocation. This occurred, ironically, just hours after I penned the ditty below.

Collage Gallery Expanded

More MP3s are online now. The Truthful Translations of Political Speech gallery has been expanded (New Nixon, Bush I and II stuff) and a new gallery has been added: Celebrity Speech.
Notables skewered in the new section include Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, among many others. I especially like Rush Limbaugh’s tribute to fascism and Paul Harvey’s ode to his bong.
There will be more galleries to come in the coming weeks as the media collage section gets more fleshed out. Spread the joy of open source music far and wide!

A/V Archive Unleashed, Launch Imminent, Random Notes

I hereby present to you the Audio Library, which contains more than four gigabytes of material. In addition to 40+ hours of shortwave pirate clips (many new to the ‘net), featured MP3s and all things Mbanna, there’s some worthy video for you to check out as well.
Examples include “Free Radio: A Video Documentary” and “Evil Empire,” an oldie but still goodie, especially with the pending NAB radio convention in Seattle (just a month and a half away) and Clear Channel’s recent higher-than-usual public visibility.
Remember: this stuff just represents what was previously encoded, plus a backlog of stuff I hadn’t gotten to putting online yet. And we haven’t even gotten to media collage! Based on this, it’s feeling about time to officially “launch” DIYmedia, which means getting back into the real swing of things, with regular updates and the like. Enforcement Action Database Online, Plea from a Colleague

It’s been tweaked slightly, and there’s still more improvements yet to come, but our world-famous (heh) FCC Enforcement Action Database is back online. One of these days I’ll write a FAQ. The restoration process should go much more quickly now that the two large jobs are out of the way…
On a related note, an online colleague, Lisa Nalbandian, a Master’s student at the UW-Milwaukee j-school, is working on a video documentary about microradio and LPFM. She’s looking for stations (both licensed and not) to speak with, preferably in the Midwest. You don’t have to be on camera if you don’t want to. Drop her a line if you want fame and enlightenment.

Summer Break?

May I be frank for a moment? HTML sucks. For building a huge-ass website, it sucks. Problem is, it’s the only code I know.
For now, the plan is to resurrect the site in HTML, which is obviously taking longer than expected. Then we can experiment. I know the design needs work, but the priority here is resurrection, not eye candy. Take your info straight for a while. Continue reading “Summer Break?”
